Castel Sant'Angello

The last time we were here the heavens had opened and St Peter's square was deserted.  This time we thought we would visit St Peter's Basilica again and maybe get a glance at one of the Popes.  As we made our way toward the Vatican we realised that the line-up was horrendous - 2 kilometres and counting with tour groups getting to jump the queue.  So plan B went into action.  We strolled around the square, did a bit of shopping and headed over to Castel Sant'Angello.  Originally built by Emperor Hadrian as his tomb, it eventually became a prison, papal refuge and now a museum.  We went to Piazza Navona for lunch where we watched the Four Rivers Fountain, one of the more famous in Rome.  From there we visited the Pantheon (Basilica of the Gods) and now a functioning church.  The pantheon was famous for its dome built in 120 AD and not exceeded until the Renaissance.  After taking in more sites on the way to our hotel, where we rested our weary feet, we went out to a local bistro we discovered last year.
