20131028 – Monday – Corfu, Greece

Corfu Town is the capital of Corfu Island and is blessed by having two, not one but two fortresses built by the Venetians about a kilometre apart built of course on the highest hills with the town wedged between them. Of course we climbed them both! The town is beautiful with Venetian inspired architecture. We happened to be there on Liberation Day which celebrated the liberation of the island in 1944 from the Nazis and the Italians. There were marching bands and a parade to entertain us. This is where I bought my Armani and Dolce & Gabbana belts. Never thought I would own anything so upscale and they must be the real thing – they cost 5 Euro (for the two)! By this time we had earned a scenic beer at a sidewalk cafe.

20131028 - Lunes - Corfu, Grecia

Corfu Town es la capital de la isla de Corfú y es bendecido por tener dos, no uno, sino dos fortalezas construidas por los venecianos, a un kilómetro de separación construido por supuesto, en las colinas más altas con la ciudad situada entre ellos. 20131027 – Sunday – Kotor, Montenegro

We docked in Kotor, another beautiful medieval town nestled at the base of the mountains along the Adriatic. It is extremely scenic as it is located on the southern most fjord in Europe. Kotor's claim to fame is a mountain top fortress 1450 steps to the top. And, yes, we climbed it! After descending, we treated ourselves to a scenic cappuccino and croissant break before continuing to tour the old town which has several beautiful cathedrals. We experienced one and half hours of spectacular scenery as we sailed out of the fjord and into the Adriatic.

Just a word about life on the ship. We are in port every day from 0800h – 1600h, so we are usually up by 0700h to catch the first tender. The ports we have visited have all been very scenic and for the most part have been cruising within sight of land. Every afternoon at 1600h finds us on deck in our lounge chairs for "sail – away". We usually have dinner between 1930h and 2000h and enjoy meeting other people by sitting at tables for 6 to 10 people. There are a lot of Canadians and Australians on this cruise as well as Americans, assorted Europeans and Dutch. This is the only ship of Holland America that is bilingual as its home port is Rotterdam. Not much good for us as neither of us knows any Dutch.

After dinner we have a choice of several lounges with classical music, piano bar, dancing as well as a stage show at 2200h. Interestingly enough, the piano – violin duo called Adagio are from Ukraine as was the duo last year!

[The locals use the fortress as their personal stair master.  We saw a couple people striding effortlessly up the hill, including a pregnant woman, but the real star of the show was a fiftyish man who RAN up the hill, then paused at a rest stop on the way down to do pushups and jumping jacks.  Wow, did we feel out of shape!]

20131026 – Saturday – Split, Croatia

The centre of the old town is housed in Diocletian's Palace, built as a retirement home in the early 4^th century AD. To this day, over 2000 people live and or work within these palace walls. Entering the city from the harbour, you enter through a long stone gallery which leads into the main square of the palace which is not the town square. We took a 90 minute guided walking tour which really brought the palace and history to life. We then toured the Cathedral and the Baptistry before heading back to the ship.

20131025 - Sábado - Split, Croacia

El centro de la ciudad vieja se encuentra en el Palacio de Diocleciano, construido como una casa de retiro en el siglo cuarto dC. 20131025 – Friday – Revenna – Crossing the Rubicon – San Marino

Caesar may have crossed the Rubicon once, or so history records, but we have done it twice on this trip near Revenna. The Revenna area is the fruit basket of Italy, and en route to San Marino we passed many orchards and market gardens. San Marino is the smallest republic in the world at 61 sq km and with 32,000 inhabitants, living 750 metres above the valley. It prides itself on having no traffic lights (only roundabouts) and no prisons. If needed they ship their criminals to Italy. We had a fascinating guided tour and then free time to shop and sight-see and admire the mountain vistas. After lunch it was back to the ship (1.75 hour drive each way). The weather has been great with temperatures in the mid-twenties and not a drop of rain.

20131024 - Viernes - Revenna - Crossing the Rubicon - San Marino

César pudo haber cruzado el Rubicón vez, o por lo registros de la historia, pero hemos hecho dos veces en este viaje cerca Revenna. El área Revenna es la canasta de frutas de Italia, y en el camino a San Marino pasamos muchos huertos y huertas. Today was pretty much a repeat of Wednesday, except that we managed to do a little shopping. After lunch near the Rialto Bridge, we took another vaporetto back to the ship. Leaving Venice was again picture perfect as we again sailed past San Marco square.

20131023 – Wednesday – Venice

It was quite a spectacular site coming into Venice from sea. All the outside islands, travelling past San Marco Square, up high on the ship – really the only way to see Venice. We docked at noon and walked into the city in a rather circuitous route, but then we had been here only last year. After dropping off a Prince Edward Island calendar for David and Catarina, the brother and sister team that run the hotel Casa Cosmos where we stayed last year, we continued exploring the city and enjoying the architecture. We had a scenic beer at Rhea and Carl's favourite bar at the foot of the Rialto bridge. At dusk, we took the vaporetto home along the Grand Canal, back to our ship.

20131023 - Miércoles - Venecia

Era un sitio bastante espectacular entrada en Venecia desde el mar. Todas las islas exteriores, que viajan más allá de la plaza de San Marco, en lo alto de la nave - en realidad la única manera de ver Venecia. Nos atracado al mediodía y nos fuimos a la ciudad en una ruta algo tortuosa, pero habíamos estado aquí el año pasado. 20131022 – Tuesday – Dubrovnik

We hit the ground running – literally! Dubrovnik is called the "Pearl of the Adriatic" and is truly one of the most beautiful cities we have seen. Nestled on a ledge overlooking the Adriatic, Dubrovnik's medieval fortress was heavily damaged during a 7 month siege in 1991. It has since been restored to it's former glory, but a map inside the city walls shows the locations of all the artillery strikes. Barely a building was left untouched. One of the most popular activities is to climb the ramparts and walk around the city walls. From this vantage point, we were able to see the new roof tiles, shiny and red, covering almost 90% of the buildings, reinforcing the damage done during the shelling. We spent an hour and a half circling the city on the wall, enjoying the views of the city and the Adriatic.

We then made a bee-line for the cable car. Ostensibly the cable car takes you up the mountain – what they don't say is that you have to climb part way up! Once on the cable car, it whisks you up to the top of Mount Srd (pronounced Serge – Croats have less vowels than Poles). At this point we concluded that it was 5 o'clock somewhere and treated ourselves to a very scenic beer! After that we wandered the old town, had a quick lunch, explored the city, saw the oldest still operating pharmacy in Europe (1317 AD). This left us just enough time for a last scenic beer at Buza – a hole in the wall where you sit on an outcropping of rock over the Adriatic.

20131022 - Martes - Dubrovnik

Nos tiramos al suelo corriendo - ¡literalmente! Dubrovnik es llamada la "Perla del Adriático " y es verdaderamente una de las ciudades más bellas que he visto. 20131021 – Monday – sea day

This was a sea day, the only one of this cruise – on our way to Dubrovnik. We relaxed and took in some of the ship's activities including lectures on the upcoming ports. The day was also spent cruising through the Strait of Messina and around the bottom of the Italian boot. From our vantage point on the Port side of the ship we were able to see the Italian coast for most of the day.

20131021 - Lunes - día del mar

Este fue un día de mar, el único de este crucero - de camino a Dubrovnik. Nos relajamos y tomamos algunas de las actividades del barco, incluyendo conferencias sobre los próximos puertos. La jornada también se dedicó crucero por el estrecho de Messina y alrededor de la parte inferior de la bota italiana. Desde nuestro punto de vista sobre el lado de babor del barco pudimos ver la costa italiana durante casi todo el día.

20131020 – Sunday – Roma to Civitavecchia

Sunday morning we had breakfast and packed for our trip to the port of Civitavecchia (Chee-vee-ta-vek-kia). A ten minute walk from our hotel, Termini station is the point of departure for most trains and buses. It is quite disturbing having people trying to latch on to you and "help" you to your train – or show you the way. I usually ignore them while Gail tells them to get lost. Gail is right, because if you don't get rid of them, they try and shake you down for 5 euro. We saw several couples being called over to their "pimps" or "handlers" for refusing to pay-up! Once we got to the port, we went on board, found our Lanai room (doors opening on deck), unpacked and explored the ship.

20131020 - Domingo - Roma a Civitavecchia

Domingo por la mañana desayunamos y empacamos para nuestro viaje hasta el puerto de Civitavecchia (Chee-vee-ta-vek-kia). A diez minutos a pie de nuestro hotel, la estación de Termini es el punto de partida para la mayoría de los trenes y autobuses. 20131019 – Saturday – Roma

Saturday morning we took the train to Ostia Antica, the old port of Roma. Ostia Antica is better preserved than Pompeii which was buried in ash and lava although less known. It was abandoned when the mouth of the Tiber silted up and made navigation impossible, leaving it several kilometres from the sea. Being a port, it was place of commerce with wholesalers plying their wares to merchants with pictographic signs in mosaics on the sidewalks to inform potential buyers of the goods. We were quite perplexed at some of the signs. Latin was not used in these signs of commerce as there were many foreign merchants, not to mention those who were uneducated.

When we got back in the late afternoon, there was a very noisy protest going on in front of our hotel and to the piazza up the street. From what we could discern, it was a general protest held by a diverse group of unions and special interest groups protesting low wages, unemployment and working conditions.

We had a lovely dinner at a Bistro near the Pantheon and walked back (for over an hour) to our hotel to help wear-off the dinner.

20131019 - Sábado - Roma
Sábado por la mañana tomamos el tren a Ostia Antica , el antiguo puerto de Roma . Ostia Antica se conserva mejor que Pompeya , que fue enterrado en ceniza y lava , aunque menos conocidos . Fue abandonada en la desembocadura del Tíber colmatado e hizo imposible la navegación , dejando a varios kilómetros del mar. Al ser un puerto, que era lugar para el comercio con los mayoristas que manejan sus mercancías a los comerciantes con signos pictográficos de mosaicos en las aceras para informar a los compradores potenciales de los productos . Nos quedamos bastante perplejos a algunos de los signos . América no se usó en estos síntomas de comercio , ya que había muchos comerciantes extranjeros , por no hablar de los que fueron educados .
Cuando regresamos por la tarde , hubo una protesta muy ruidosa pasando en frente de nuestro hotel y de la plaza de la calle. 20131018 - Friday - Roma

Castel Sant'Angello

The last time we were here the heavens had opened and St Peter's square was deserted.  This time we thought we would visit St Peter's Basilica again and maybe get a glance at one of the Popes.  As we made our way toward the Vatican we realised that the line-up was horrendous - 2 kilometres and counting with tour groups getting to jump the queue.  So plan B went into action.  We strolled around the square, did a bit of shopping and headed over to Castel Sant'Angello.  Originally built by Emperor Hadrian as his tomb, it eventually became a prison, papal refuge and now a museum.  We went to Piazza Navona for lunch where we watched the Four Rivers Fountain, one of the more famous in Rome.  From there we visited the Pantheon (Basilica of the Gods) and now a functioning church.  The pantheon was famous for its dome built in 120 AD and not exceeded until the Renaissance.  After taking in more sites on the way to our hotel, where we rested our weary feet, we went out to a local bistro we discovered last year.

20131017 - Roma

Vecchia Locanda

We arrived at the Merulana, the hotel we stayed at the last time in Rome, just before noon, had lunch and then a nap as we did not sleep on the plane.  At lunch at a small local pizzeria (excellent pizza), our waiter told us we could take the number 64 bus to most attractions in Rome.  He said that Romans rarely take it.  It usually has about 35% tourists and the rest are pickpockets and thieves!  After watching us and another couple studying our maps he commented that being a tourist is hard work - and he is right! Refreshed, we hopped the Metro to the Spanish Steps sauntered to the Trevi Fountain and then to the Pantheon admiring the now floodlit structures.  After a wonderful dinner outdoors and in shirtsleeves at the Vecchia Locanda  we then strolled (brisk walk) for almost 2 hours taking in the floodlit sites of Rome , arriving at our hotel just after 2300h.  We marvelled at how pleasant Rome was in the sunshine!  The last time we were here there was a deluge and some old guy called Noah was building a huge boat behind the Vatican.

Llegamos al Merulana , el hotel nos alojamos en la última vez en Roma, poco antes del mediodía , almorzamos y luego una siesta , ya que no pude dormir en el avión. En el almuerzo en una pequeña pizzería (excelente pizza) , nuestro camarero nos dijo que podíamos tomar el autobús número 64 a la mayoría de puntos de interés de Roma. 20131016 To Rome

It was exciting to be on our way to Rome - perfect connections - Charlottetown to Montreal, then non-stop to Rome.  I previously wrote that on our last trip by Air Canada we were quite pleasantly surprised by the food service which we attributed to finally trying to meet Star Alliance standards.  Well, let me tell you, they are back to Air Canada standards.  The dinner was bad and breakfast was a slice of packaged banana bread with no expiry date!  Thankfully we carry bagels and creme cheese because of my diabetes.  We had a sleepless night - probably due to the dinner.

Below is our itinerary.  We spend a few days before in and around Rome and 4 days in Athens at the end of the cruise.
