20131104 – Monday – In Flight

Morning came early – 0200h – that's 2am! We took a taxi to catch the airport bus. [ The night rate for a taxi is double – so a whopping €60 - close to $100 CDN. The taxi plus the bus cost €15.] After that it was a long day of hurry up and wait. First a 0630h flight from Athens to Munich, 3.5 hour stop-over, highlight – Lufthansa provides free coffee including cappuccino as well as newspapers. Then at 1100h a 9 hour Air Canada flight to Toronto (served food that contravenes all edicts on the treatment of prisoners) where we had a 7 hour stop-over. By the time we boarded the flight to Charlottetown at 2100h, Gail was asleep before take-off. When made it home to Stratford at 0100h and were asleep by 0200h – a full 31 hours of awake time!

We knew we were in Charlottetown when:

• there were no taxis at the airport (who knew that these aircraft that fly-in each day carried people)

• when the taxis came, the taxi driver stood by commenting on how heavy the suitcases looked. His tip was appropriate!

20131104 - Lunes - En Vuelo

Llegó la mañana temprano - 0200h - eso es 2am! Nos tomamos un taxi para coger el autobús del aeropuerto. 20131103 – Sunday – Athens

Sunday morning we walked up to Syntagma (Constitution) Square to watch the changing of the guard. This happens hourly every day, but involves only 3 guards whereas on Sunday at 1100h, there are two regiments, a band and a colour party – quite a spectacular display. The Evzone guards are clad in pleated kilts, white britches and pom-pom shoes. The kilts have 400 pleats – one for each year of Ottoman occupation and the soldiers are responsible for their own ironing!

We strolled back down the Plaka and had lunch at a sidewalk cafe with a front-row view of the Acropolis high above us. After this it was back to the hotel to pack for our middle of the night departure.

After dinner we took a last stroll around the neighbourhood and then back to the hotel for an early night.

20131103 - Domingo - Atenas

Domingo por la mañana caminamos hasta la Plaza Syntagma (Constitución) para ver el cambio de guardia. 20131102 – Saturday – Athens

We went to see the new Acropolis Museum which is at the foot of the Acropolis. It is an ultra modern building, built over an active archeological site of the Greek Bronze Age, Roman and Byzantine Greek eras. Most of the exterior approach and interior floor areas is glass in order for patrons to view the "dig" and to provide natural light. After touring the museum we found a quaint little restaurant in the Plaka and had lunch. After lunch we hiked over to view Hadrian's gate (this guy built stuff all over the Roman world. Anywhere in the Roman Empire, just say to the locals "Hadrian" and they will point you to one of his temples, gates, aqueducts, etc.). Nearby is the temple of Olympian Zeus, the largest temple in ancient Greece which was begun late in the 6^th century BC and ultimately finished by (guess who?) Hadrian – in 131 AD. We finished off the afternoon with another circuit of the city on the Hop-on, Hop-off bus and then walked back to the hotel down the pedestrian mall of Ermou street, jam packed with people on a Saturday afternoon.

Saturday night we had a lovely traditional greek dinner at the Restaurant Hermion. We sat outdoors in a court-yard and listed to a live duo performing greek music.

Fuimos a ver el nuevo Museo de la Acrópolis, que se encuentra al pie de la Acrópolis . 20131101 – Friday – Athens

We started early and explored the Ancient Agora (Marketplace) on our way to the Acropolis. It was incredible to visit these ancient sites – this time in the blazing sun as opposed to a downpour in 80 km winds 10 years ago! On the steep climb to the acropolis, we diverted to climb Mars hill where Paul preached to the Athenians. Still climbing we passed the Odeon of Herodus Atticus, a 5000 seat amphitheatre built in 161 AD and still used today for musical performances. [This is why today there is a chain of cinemas called – The Odeon] Odeon actually means musical theatre. From there we continued our climb to the Propylaea - the grand entrance gate. At the top we were amused to find a dog sprawled across the path oblivious to the crowds, enjoying the only shade on the Acropolis. From there we admired the Parthenon and the Erechtheion which are both undergoing extensive renovation and preservation. We wandered about the site, admiring the work which has lasted for millenia (reminded by a guide the previous visit that the Roman ruins are just that – newer and more ruined). Of course, we enjoyed the view from the Acropolis – which means highest rock we could find upon which to build our temple and city.

After a quick lunch at a sidewalk cafe, we made our way to the Archeological Museum – which was closed for renovation the last time we were here. From the Archeological Museum we took the Hop-on bus back to our hotel and spent more time wandering the streets of the Plaka. For dinner we went to a seafood restaurant not far from our hotel. The interior was was exposed stone, brick and beams with at least 4 metre ceilings. The owner said that it dated to the 1930s and had been a bakery. The food was fine although not noteworthy. We also learned that not only this restaurant, but probably all Greek restaurants, now serve "house wines" that come from "Dregs R Us", and no matter how cold it is served – yes red wine, it is hard to kill the taste without drinking I would estimate at least 3 Litres. For some reason, the other wines (in bottles) ran around 25 – 30 Euro per bottle – not cheap consider the strength of the Euro – now about $1.45.

Empezamos temprano y recorrer la antigua Ágora ( mercado ) en nuestro camino a la Acrópolis. 20131031 – Thursday - Athens

We booked a 0930h departure time from the ship, so we had time for a leisurely breakfast and waited for our “colour” to be called. After taking a taxi to the hotel, we dropped our luggage and went to explore the neighbourhood. We were close to the Acropolis and all the major sites.

We visited the Mitropolis Cathedral and square where the Jewish community erected a statue to Archbishop Damaskinos who stood up to the Nazis. When they were going to put him in front of a firing squad, he asked that he should be hanged instead in good Orthodox tradition. After the occupation, he served as regent and then prime minister.

We had a great lunch of Souvlaki we took a Hop-on, Hop-off bus tour of the city to get better oriented. After dinner we walked to Monasteraki Square and browsed the flea market.

We were previously in Athens in 2003 when they were preparing for the Olympics and were amazed at how clean everything was. Unfortunately, there were a number of museums, etc. closed for refurbishing prior to the Olympics. It was sad to see the effect the current turmoil has had on the city. There is graffiti everywhere, reflecting the state of the economy and estimates of youth unemployment running between 50 and 65%, depending on the definition of the age range for youth.

20131031 - Jueves - Atenas

20131030 – Wednesday – Nafplion & Mycenae

We docked in the beautiful port town of Nafplion with Venetian houses and neo-classical mansions. This town was the original capital of Greece in the 1820s and is guarded by three castles, but our goal for today was different. Picking up our rental car we headed out of town to Mycenae an ancient capital of Greece dating back to the 15^th century BC. After exploring the ruins for over 2 hours in the blazing sun, we had lunch at a local taverna. We then meandered back to the port, admiring the countryside, and returned the car. We then had time for a brief exploration of the town before returning to the ship.

As a side note, the car hire person explained that the reason for the delay that morning was because we had booked the car through Europcar and specified a standard (we were given no other choice by the website) he was trying to chase down a standard. He explained that he ran his own agency as well as Europcar and had a parking lot full of automatics – because that is what Australians, Canadians and Americans wanted!

Sadly this was the last night of our cruise, but we had a lovely farewell dinner with two of the couples we had become friends with.

Mycenae - Lion's Gate (head now missing)

20131030 - Miércoles - Nauplia y Micenas
Nos atracado en la hermosa ciudad portuaria de Nafplion con casas venecianas y mansiones neoclásicas . 20131029 – Tuesday – Katakolo and Olympia

After docking, we caught a bus which we had booked in Canada, along with new friends from the ship. While waiting in the parking lot, we met Linda from another ship who had the Rick Steves guide on her iPad. When we got to Olympia, Gail with her hard copy and Linda with her iPad conducted an improptu tour of the site to fellow travellers. It was an amazing site to visit. We saw where the Olympic Torch has been lit, both in ancient and modern times. The Olympics were held on this site every four years starting in 776 BC. Among other sites, we saw the gymnasium, the winner's circle, the stadium and the track. There is also a very interesting museum detailing the Olympics and the site.

20131029 - Martes - Katakolo y Olympia

Desde el embarcadero, cogimos un autobús que habíamos reservado en Canadá, junto con los nuevos amigos de la nave. Mientras esperaba en el aparcamiento, nos encontramos con Linda de otro barco que tenía la guía Rick Steves en su iPad. Cuando llegamos a Olympia, Gail con su papel y Linda con su iPad a cabo una gira improptu del sitio a otros viajeros. Era un sitio increíble para visitar. Vimos que la antorcha olímpica se ha encendido, tanto en los tiempos antiguos y modernos. Los Juegos Olímpicos se celebraron en este sitio cada cuatro años a partir del 776 antes de Cristo. Entre otros sitios, vimos el gimnasio, el círculo de ganadores, el estadio y la pista. También hay un museo muy interesante que detalla los Juegos Olímpicos y el sitio.

20131028 – Monday – Corfu, Greece

Corfu Town is the capital of Corfu Island and is blessed by having two, not one but two fortresses built by the Venetians about a kilometre apart built of course on the highest hills with the town wedged between them. Of course we climbed them both! The town is beautiful with Venetian inspired architecture. We happened to be there on Liberation Day which celebrated the liberation of the island in 1944 from the Nazis and the Italians. There were marching bands and a parade to entertain us. This is where I bought my Armani and Dolce & Gabbana belts. Never thought I would own anything so upscale and they must be the real thing – they cost 5 Euro (for the two)! By this time we had earned a scenic beer at a sidewalk cafe.

20131028 - Lunes - Corfu, Grecia

Corfu Town es la capital de la isla de Corfú y es bendecido por tener dos, no uno, sino dos fortalezas construidas por los venecianos, a un kilómetro de separación construido por supuesto, en las colinas más altas con la ciudad situada entre ellos. Por supuesto, nos subimos a los dos! La ciudad es preciosa, con arquitectura de inspiración veneciana. Місто Корфу знаходиться в столиці острова Корфу і благословив при наявності двох, а не одного, а двох фортець побудована венеціанцями приблизно в кілометрі один від одного побудували, звичайно, на найвищих пагорбів з містом вклинюється між ними. 20131027 – Sunday – Kotor, Montenegro

We docked in Kotor, another beautiful medieval town nestled at the base of the mountains along the Adriatic. It is extremely scenic as it is located on the southern most fjord in Europe. Kotor's claim to fame is a mountain top fortress 1450 steps to the top. And, yes, we climbed it! After descending, we treated ourselves to a scenic cappuccino and croissant break before continuing to tour the old town which has several beautiful cathedrals. We experienced one and half hours of spectacular scenery as we sailed out of the fjord and into the Adriatic.

Just a word about life on the ship. We are in port every day from 0800h – 1600h, so we are usually up by 0700h to catch the first tender. The ports we have visited have all been very scenic and for the most part have been cruising within sight of land. Every afternoon at 1600h finds us on deck in our lounge chairs for "sail – away". We usually have dinner between 1930h and 2000h and enjoy meeting other people by sitting at tables for 6 to 10 people. There are a lot of Canadians and Australians on this cruise as well as Americans, assorted Europeans and Dutch. This is the only ship of Holland America that is bilingual as its home port is Rotterdam. Not much good for us as neither of us knows any Dutch.

After dinner we have a choice of several lounges with classical music, piano bar, dancing as well as a stage show at 2200h. Interestingly enough, the piano – violin duo called Adagio are from Ukraine as was the duo last year!

[The locals use the fortress as their personal stair master.  We saw a couple people striding effortlessly up the hill, including a pregnant woman, but the real star of the show was a fiftyish man who RAN up the hill, then paused at a rest stop on the way down to do pushups and jumping jacks.  Wow, did we feel out of shape!]

20131026 - Domingo - Kotor , MontenegroNos atracado en Kotor , otro precioso pueblo medieval situado en la base de las montañas a lo largo del Adriático. Es muy pintoresca, ya que se encuentra en el fiordo más meridional de Europa. La afirmación de Kotor a la fama es una cima de la montaña fortaleza 1.450 escalones hasta la cima . Y, sí , subimos él! Después de descender , nos dimos el capricho de un capuchino y un croissant escénica descanso antes de continuar para recorrer el casco antiguo, que tiene varias hermosas catedrales . 20131026 – Saturday – Split, Croatia

The centre of the old town is housed in Diocletian's Palace, built as a retirement home in the early 4^th century AD. To this day, over 2000 people live and or work within these palace walls. Entering the city from the harbour, you enter through a long stone gallery which leads into the main square of the palace which is not the town square. We took a 90 minute guided walking tour which really brought the palace and history to life. We then toured the Cathedral and the Baptistry before heading back to the ship.

20131025 - Sábado - Split, Croacia

El centro de la ciudad vieja se encuentra en el Palacio de Diocleciano, construido como una casa de retiro en el siglo cuarto dC. A día de hoy, más de 2.000 personas viven y trabajo o entre estos muros del palacio. Entrando a la ciudad desde el puerto, se puede entrar por una larga galería de piedra que conduce a la plaza principal del palacio, que no es la plaza del pueblo. У центрі старого міста займає будівлю палацу Діоклетіана, побудованого в будинку престарілих на початку 4-го століття нашої ери. 20131025 – Friday – Revenna – Crossing the Rubicon – San Marino

Caesar may have crossed the Rubicon once, or so history records, but we have done it twice on this trip near Revenna. The Revenna area is the fruit basket of Italy, and en route to San Marino we passed many orchards and market gardens. San Marino is the smallest republic in the world at 61 sq km and with 32,000 inhabitants, living 750 metres above the valley. It prides itself on having no traffic lights (only roundabouts) and no prisons. If needed they ship their criminals to Italy. We had a fascinating guided tour and then free time to shop and sight-see and admire the mountain vistas. After lunch it was back to the ship (1.75 hour drive each way). The weather has been great with temperatures in the mid-twenties and not a drop of rain.

20131024 - п'ятниця - Revenna - Перейти Рубікон - Сан-Марино

20131024 - Viernes - Revenna - Crossing the Rubicon - San Marino

César pudo haber cruzado el Rubicón vez, o por lo registros de la historia, pero hemos hecho dos veces en este viaje cerca Revenna. El área Revenna es la canasta de frutas de Italia, y en el camino a San Marino pasamos muchos huertos y huertas. San Marino es la república más pequeña del mundo con 61 kilómetros cuadrados y con 32.000 habitantes, que viven a 750 metros sobre el valle. 20131024 – Thursday – Venice

Today was pretty much a repeat of Wednesday, except that we managed to do a little shopping. After lunch near the Rialto Bridge, we took another vaporetto back to the ship. Leaving Venice was again picture perfect as we again sailed past San Marco square.

20131023 – Wednesday – Venice

It was quite a spectacular site coming into Venice from sea. All the outside islands, travelling past San Marco Square, up high on the ship – really the only way to see Venice. We docked at noon and walked into the city in a rather circuitous route, but then we had been here only last year. After dropping off a Prince Edward Island calendar for David and Catarina, the brother and sister team that run the hotel Casa Cosmos where we stayed last year, we continued exploring the city and enjoying the architecture. We had a scenic beer at Rhea and Carl's favourite bar at the foot of the Rialto bridge. At dusk, we took the vaporetto home along the Grand Canal, back to our ship.

20131023 - середа - Венеція

20131023 - Miércoles - Venecia

Era un sitio bastante espectacular entrada en Venecia desde el mar. Todas las islas exteriores, que viajan más allá de la plaza de San Marco, en lo alto de la nave - en realidad la única manera de ver Venecia. Nos atracado al mediodía y nos fuimos a la ciudad en una ruta algo tortuosa, pero habíamos estado aquí el año pasado. Después de dejar a un Prince Edward Island calendario para David y Catarina, el equipo de hermanos que dirige el hotel Casa Cosmos, donde estuvimos el año pasado, continuamos a explorar la ciudad y disfrutar de la arquitectura. Nos tomamos una cerveza escénica en Rhea y el bar favorito de Carl, al pie del puente de Rialto. Al caer la tarde, tomamos el hogar vaporetto por el Gran Canal, de vuelta a la nave.t
